![]() ![]() I’m not much for raw veggies or lengthy processed ingredient lists. My friends and family are definitely considerate of my vegetarian diet, but when they offer to serve vegetarian food it usually consists of a raw veggie tray and a pre-packaged, soy-based frozen patty. Here in the Midwest where I live a barbecue means meat…a whole lot of meat (and potato salad). Q: What if I have other questions?Ī: If you have any questions, you can chat with a Food Safety Specialist by calling the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-88) or visiting AskUSDA.Labor Day is just around the corner, which means I will likely attend a barbecue. You can also serve a little at a time and keep the rest in a refrigerator or cooler. How should we keep these sides cold?Ī: You can keep salads and other side dishes cold by putting the serving dish on a bed of ice. Q: For the Fourth of July, we have a lot of friends and family over for a BBQ, and everyone brings different side dishes. If you’re eating outside and the temperature is above 90☏, food should not sit out for more than an hour. How long can my food sit outside?Ī: Perishable food should not sit out at room temperature for more than two hours. Q: On nice summer days, I like to eat outside on the patio and soak up the sun. Washing produce before cutting or peeling it helps keep bacteria that may be on the surface from transferring to the part you will eat. For produce with a firm skin, like avocados or melons, scrub the surface with a brush. What steps should I take to handle produce safely?Ī: Rinse fruits and vegetables under running water, even if you plan to peel them. Q: I like to have a lot of fruits and vegetables at my cookout. Be sure to put the cooked food on a clean plate not one that held raw meat. O-Off the grill! Once the meat has reached its safe internal temperature, take it off the grill. Wait 10 to 20 seconds for an accurate reading. P-Place the thermometer into the thickest part of the meat or poultry. The USDA recommends using the PRO method: You can’t tell something is safe just by looking at it. How do I know when everything is finished cooking and is safe to eat?Ī: The only way to know your meat has finished cooking and is safe to eat is to use a food thermometer. Q: When I’m grilling for my family and friends, I often have a lot of different items on the grill, like chicken, hot dogs, burgers, and ribs. This gives harmful bacteria lots of opportunities to make people sick. Additionally, during the summer, people like to be outside camping, going on picnics, or grilling, and all of these activities involve food. This is the type of environment in which they thrive. Q: Why do more people get foodborne illnesses during the summer?Ī: Bacteria love hot and humid weather. For people with cancer, unsafe food handling can result in lengthy illnesses, hospitalizations, or even death. With a low white blood cell count, any infection, including foodborne illnesses, can become serious. White blood cells serve as the body’s main defense against infections. Q: Why is food safety important for people with cancer and their caregivers?Ī: Cancer treatments, like radiation therapy and chemotherapy, can decrease a person’s white blood cell count. So how can you protect yourself? Here are answers to some common questions to help you and your family stay food safe this summer. If you or someone you are caring for is receiving or recovering from cancer treatment, foodborne illness can be severe or even deadly. But do you know what else loves the hot weather? The bacteria that cause food poisoning. It’s a great time to have a little fun in the sun with friends and family. ![]() A motorcycle sales boom in the United States fueled by the Baby Boomer generation, helped to spark a growth in the popularity of motocross among young Americans. They dominated the event, placing their lightweight two-strokes into the top six finishing positions. The following year Hallman was joined by other motocross stars including Roger DeCoster, Joël Robert, and Dave Bickers. Motocross arrived in the United States in 1966 when Swedish champion, Torsten Hallman rode an exhibition event against the top American TT riders at the Corriganville Movie Ranch also known as Hopetown in Simi Valley, California. Riders from Belgium and Sweden began to dominate the sport during this period. īy the mid-1960s, advances in two-stroke engine technology meant that the heavier, four-stroke machines were relegated to niche competitions. The victory marked a turning point in motocross history as, it was the first win by a two-stroke powered motorcycle in the premier division of the Motocross World Championships. Ī significant moment in motocross history occurred during the 1963 FIM Motocross World Championship when ČZ factory rider Vlastimil Valek rode a 263cc two-stroke motorcycle to win the first moto of the 500cc Czechoslovakian Motocross Grand Prix ahead of a field of top-class, four stroke motorcycles. The period after World War II was dominated by BSA, which had become the largest motorcycle company in the world. Rigid frames gave way to suspensions by the early 1930s, and swinging fork rear suspension appeared by the early 1950s, several years before manufacturers incorporated it in the majority of production street bikes. The intense competition over rugged terrain led to technical improvements in motorcycles. Off-road motorcycles from that era differed little from those used on the street. The event was the forerunner to supercross competitions. The first motocross race held on an artificial track inside a stadium took place on August 28, 1948, at Buffalo Stadium in the Paris suburb of Montrouge. The entry will be limited to 150 competitors – see During the 1930s the sport grew in popularity, especially in Britain where teams from the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA), Norton, Matchless, Rudge, and AJS competed in the events. The same cub that ran the 1924 event will be running it again over the same land. The 100th anniversary of the very first Motocross race will be commemorated in March 2024. The first known scramble race took place at Camberley, Surrey in 1924. Though known as scrambles racing (or just scrambles) in the United Kingdom, the sport grew in popularity and the competitions became known internationally as "motocross racing", by combining the French word for motorcycle, motocyclette, or moto for short, into a portmanteau with "cross country". When organisers dispensed with delicate balancing and strict scoring of trials in favour of a race to become the fastest rider to the finish, the activity became known as " hare scrambles", said to have originated in the phrase, "a rare old scramble" describing one such early race. Motocross first evolved in Britain from motorcycle trials competitions, such as the Auto-Cycle Clubs's first quarterly trial in 1909 and the Scottish Six Days Trial that began in 1912. Around 500 BC Greek philosopher and astronomer Pythagoras carefully observed the narrow boundary line-the terminator-between the dark and light hemispheres of the Moon. The Greeks were among the first to take a scientific look at the Moon and her phases. What did he think it was? It’s not hard to imagine how the Moon became the source of many religions, myths and legends throughout the ages. Nothing on Earth was quite like this strange brilliant object arcing through the night sky. Imagine a Neanderthal peering out of his cave some dark summer night as the Full Moon rises above the horizon. The illustration below shows all eight main and minor Moon phases and where they occur in the lunar cycle. These interim phases are Waxing Crescent Moon, Waxing Gibbous Moon, Waning Gibbous Moon and Waning Crescent Moon. Unlike the main phases, these minor phases don’t happen at a specific time or luminosity, rather they describe the Moon’s phase for the entire time period between each main phase. The remaining four Moon phases occur at halfway points between the main phases. When people say “today is a Full Moon” it’s important to remember that doesn’t mean the Moon is full all day long, only that the Full Moon Phase occurs on this day. The First and Last Quarter phases happen when the Moon is exactly half illuminated, with 50-percent luminosity. The New Moon Phase occurs when the Moon is completely dark with zero-percent luminosity, while the Full Moon Phase is completely bright with 100-percent luminosity. ![]() These phases occur at very specific times and are measured by both the Moon’s luminosity and how far along the Moon is in its orbit around Earth. ![]() ![]() The four main Moon phases in order are the New Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon and Last Quarter Moon.
